Not your average possession flick!
TW: suicide, flashing lights
I get this movie! It’s simple and moody. There’s much more to see and observe than there is a plot to understand. "Darling" is a piece of art painted in the palette of horror noir. I heard this film called "minimalistic". I can agree but not with the negative connotation. Its simplicity is realistic. The madness is realistic. The anticipation and anxiety you feel from watching "Darling" is real.
I’m not sure I would have enjoyed this movie as much if Lauren Ashley Carter wasn’t the star. She has big dark eyes that look like they carry a lot of sadness. Her face is very expressive and those of us who love details (hello #neurodivergent) experience this film as an observer. We are part of her or maybe we are her, as we experience all she sees and feels during her fall into madness. If you have never felt this kind of darkness before, be prepared to witness it through the jarring noises, quick scene cuts and flashes of light.
I have to say I fell right into this movie. I suppose it feels familiar. Carter’s descent into the darkness feels personal. As you’re watching, you know how it feels to be frightened at your own thoughts and confused by your own behaviors. Darling’s story may not be our exact manifestation of madness or trauma, but we do empathize with the feelings behind them.
This film has quickly rose to the top of my most favorite horror films and will become part of my personal annual Halloween film fest. It will join other classics like “May” and “Trick r Treat”.
So, yes I recommend “Darling”. Let us watch as Carter becomes a caretaker of a historic, haunted, New York building whose ghosts come to haunt her in the most terrible of ways.
